These days it seems that more and more people are looking to move into different types of jobs for a variety of reasons. Whether it’s to try something new, to get more job security, to follow a dream or to make more money, there’s a long list of reasons people have begun to make moves throughout their careers into different types of jobs. Many people today even do courses and degrees through the Open University and the like in order to continue working full time while getting a degree in a whole array of disciplines such as dentistry, medicine, teaching and more.
If you’ve always been a bit curious about dentistry specifically and want to pursue it, here are some ways you can get into it and get a better understanding – even before you take on the degree.
Ask At Your Local Dentist Office
One of the best and sometimes easiest ways to get started in a career is simply to ask. Okay, they aren’t going to hire an uncertified, unlicensed dentist coming in off the street but you can organise a meeting with your local Surrey dentist to sit down and discuss with you the ins and outs of becoming qualified. They may even be willing to hire you as something like administration or fileperson while you work towards becoming a hygienist or dental therapist. You never know, but it never hurts to ask!
Job Shadowing
Job shadowing is a great way to get a feel for a role and is often quite simple. Job shadowing is exactly what it sounds like – essentially following someone around all day and learning what they do. Think of it as a ‘day in the life’ type thing where you can get up close and personal to the daily work that is required in the dental surgery so you can get a true look behind the scenes at what goes on – not just what you see as the patient.
The Degree and Courses
After you’ve decided that this is the way forward for you, you will want to start looking at getting your degree and completing the necessary courses to become a fully licensed dentist. While it may take a couple of years to do, it will be well worth it in the end, regardless of whether you go all the way to being a certified dentist or you’re intending to stop at being a dental hygienist. Whatever you choose, a career in dentistry is sure to be enjoyable and rewarding.
With many people wanting to try something new, career moves are always going to happen and are very common nowadays. While further education is sometimes required, you can always do it part time or online so you can continue working while you work toward that cool, new career. Good luck!
