Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment, administered by healthcare professionals known as Orthodontists, is the process of improving the position and appearance of abnormally arranged teeth. Figuring out which problems you have with your teeth, and possibly your jaw, will determine exactly which treatment you will receive. There are many different orthodontic treatments available.images (4)

During the first stage your Orthodontist will assess the positioning of your teeth, and the general structure of your jaw, this will help him to give you the correct treatment for your particular need. This first stage usually involves taking photographs and plaster models of your teeth, and then an X-ray. The treatment uses appliances attached to the teeth to correct the position, with the main four types being fixed braces, removable braces, functional braces, and headgear.

Fixed braces:

Fixed braces are by far the most common type of treatment administered by Orthodontists. They are used when there are several teeth in need on re-positioning, or when there is a need for a more precise treatment to prevent problems arising in the future. These fixed braces are generally made out of metal, but if you need specialized treatment you may have ceramic or clear braces fitted.

Removable braces:

The removable braces are used for the very minor cases of dental problems, like straightening only slightly crooked teeth. They should be taken out if you are cleaning your mouth, and for most outdoor activities like football, and rugby. Your orthodontist will very likely have a list of the things you should remove the braces for.

Functional appliances:

Functional appliances are mainly for correcting the positioning of the upper and lower jaw, but do also help with teeth too. These appliances are generally worn all the time, but some cases differ so make sure to get detailed instructions from your Orthodontist on when and how to wear them. If worn incorrectly, your treatment will be unsuccessful.

Headgear:

Headgear can be used to straighten the back teeth themselves, or to hold them in position whilst the braces on the front teeth are doing their work. It is rare to have to use the headgear for more than a few hours in an evening. Some cases may require you to sleep in the headgear. And, of course, you cannot eat or drink whilst using it.

There are many other treatments available, those will depend on how much of a problem you have and will need to be properly discussed with your Orthodontist.
