How to Prevent Baby Tooth Decay

So you’ve just had a little one, and you’re figuring out all the new things to know about your brand new baby. How to take care of them when they’re crying, happy, hungry and sleepy – it can be exhausting learning everything about a newborn, but the process gets easier with time. It’s understandable that there is a lot to remember, but one very crucial aspect of your baby’s health is their oral care. You might think that since their teeth are so small, babies don’t really need to be brushed as regularly as adults. But this is not the case! It’s important to prevent tooth decay in your baby’s mouth, and instill healthy oral habits for their life.

Care for the gums

So your new baby doesn’t come with teeth, they come with very sensitive gums that will soon be growing teeth! This means that you need to take care of their gums even before the new teeth come in. Clean your newborn’s gums by using a damn soft washcloth after their feedings, to prevent decay from forming where the teeth will come in.

Brush gently

Just like you would take care of your own teeth, you need to brush your baby’s teeth after meals. Use a very small, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush the surface of the baby teeth to keep plaque away.

When to see the dentist

This may vary depending on you and your child, so talk to your doctor to find out their recommendation for the first dentist visit. A good rule of thumb, though, is to have the first dentist appointment by the first birthday. And from there, children should visit the dentist every six months.

Maintain good habits

As your child grows older, it’s the perfect opportunity to instill in them healthy oral habits. If you help your child have fun brushing their teeth, they will be far less likely to throw a temper tantrum when they need to do it before bed, and when they need to visit the dentist for appointments.
